Be Rants and Raves: Company Holiday Celebrations Need to Connect the Dots, Connecting All Year Long with Purpose

And Furthermore, Now this is the time we either celebrate the great things happening in your company or in the world. Or, we have had enough (remember Paddy Chayefsky’s “NETWORK”?)!!! Here’s my latest “rant!”

I’m really tired of getting gifts at work that I don’t need or don’t want to EAT! On that note—I don’t want any more fruitcake—ever! Please don’t send fruitcake. I do like fruit, however, but don’t spend 40 dollars on four (that’s right 4) pears! Send me a $40 gift card to my favorite “green” grocery store!! That way I get to give back and you get to give!! J

Next, please don’t send me any planner books. I don’t use them. Actually, who does use them anymore? I’ve had a blackberry or palm pilot for the last decade… Aren’t those things outdated? It makes you wonder how outdated everything else is that comes from the person who sent it to you. Or how outdated their company methodology is… This is particularly scary to me, as a planner book came from the investment firm that does my 401K. If they are thinking in terms of trends from “a decade ago” than they must really be messing up my 401k!!! No wonder my whole investment portfolio has tanked the last four years! Oh my! Now, why don’t they just put the $5 in my 401k, instead of buying the dinosaur book? That would be better! Or better yet, send to my favorite charity and give there? Lots of companies are doing that with great results. They probably cut back their giving, which may help the margins of the company (that you are a stockholder in) and they are doing the “right thing” to boot! Now, that’s connecting the dots with holiday purpose… You see, it’s really easy to make a difference and still win. Actually, it’s a triple win. And, it’s the only way to get it—you win, the other person wins—and the community wins! Yep, I’ll take the trifecta every time!
